Fiber is a special type of carbohydrate that your body can’t digest. Though most carbohydrates are broken down into sugar molecules (that your body uses for energy), fiber cannot be broken down into sugar molecules, and instead it passes through your body undigested.
Fiber is probably best known for its ability to prevent or relieve constipation. But fiber provides many other health benefits as well, such as helping to maintain a healthy weight and lowering your risk of diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer. Fiber helps regulate your body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check.
While a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes will help you meet your fiber requirements (a minimum of 30 – 38 g/day for men, 25 g for women), the average American (and Canadian) only eats about 15 g fiber daily, according to data from the Institutes of Medicine.
Psyllium can play a key role in ensuring you get enough fiber each day.
Psyllium is the most widely used and strongest natural dietary fiber for promoting regularity and supporting heart health. It is most effective when used every day, and can be used as long as desired. There are many reasons why psyllium are a part of daily health maintenance for millions. Psyllium helps maintain normal cholesterol levels, including a proper balance of HDL and LDL cholesterol.
Psyllium helps promote normal regularity. Unlike stimulant laxatives, psyllium is gentle and not habit forming. Psyllium’s bulking action makes elimination easier and more comfortable. At the same time, psyllium sweeps waste and toxins more quickly out of the body, so toxins are not reabsorbed from the colon back into the bloodstream. Psyllium can be taken either with or between meals, and when used in recommended amounts should not interfere with absorption of vitamins and other nutrients. Gluten-Free: psyllium does not contain any gluten so people who are gluten sensitive can enjoy!
